Metal Windows performed extensive servicing and repairs on the original universal steel frames in this iconic Cape Town landmark.
By repurposing the original brass hardware of these old steel sash windows (which are unique in Cape Town), we were able to service and restore the windows to their original glory, instead of ripping them out and replacing them – thus adding to the heritage value of the site and keeping costs down.
In order to achieve the necessary steel window modifications and repairs to this building, all the glass which had become broken or brittle with age, needed to be hacked out and replaced with new glazing.
The Old Mutual Terraces are in Darling Street Cape Town, across from the old Post Office Building. Another Cape Town icon was converted into mixed-used accommodation.
A mixed use building comprising both commercial and residential use studios. Semi-industrial styling, raw brick work and exposed services are complimented by high tech glass and heavy duty aluminium section.
Imported German Wood windows needed servicing and repair. Spare parts were sourced and flown in.
The windows are configured to tilt and turn, and open side hung. We improvised and got all the Original wood windows working again.
Phase 1 of the V&A Caltex project entailed the repurposing of a 40m-long leaking sky light. The solution that we proposed was to completely remove the glass from the existing skylight frame and fit new glass on a modified frame to create a new “glass skin”.
