HOUSE PRESTAGE SUNSET BEACH
Resting upon the shoreline at Sunset Beach, this family home firmly grips its toes into the sand. A complete renovation included, all windows and doors replaced with new Aluminium Forman Brand products by Metal Windows. The owners chose a custom “beach house” light blue-grey colour for all the windows & doors which fits perfectly with the beach vibe.
The home is set on two levels with a languid, open living space at the helm. With full beach access, this hideaway summons the sea air to enter, and engulf in summer and has ample cozy living areas when winter beckons. In this location, it receives the full brunt of the Northwest weather in CT winters. Window & door systems, finishes, glass and configuration were chosen to make the home easy to keep cool in summer and to heat in winter, with maximum energy efficiency.
All of the windows and doors are glazed with double-glazed units that are made up of high-performance thermally efficient glass paired with intruder-proof lamination. The best of what is available for thermal performance and security. The aluminium products custom-designed for the house are installed with the full Metal Windows Barsdamp® system to ensure watertightness and prevent dampness under the extreme conditions present on the Cape West Coast.
The windows upstairs are a combination of top-hung and fixed picture/view framing, with one huge sliding door, in three panels, that exits the main bedroom onto a great sea-facing patio. This allows for 2/3rds of a very wide opening to be open in good weather while ensuring storm condition weather tightness.
All sea facing, with uninterrupted views for miles, the lounge, kitchen & study, We designed three-panel sliding doors for direct access to the patio and pool (see photos below). In the winter, bad weather ventilation is accommodated in the design by including discrete top-hung vents.
For the timber front door, we designed an aluminium outer frame with aluminium viewing sidelights to match the rest of the house. The kitchen back door is a single-hinged door with a fanlight over the top including a top hung vent, for ventilation on high wind days when doors are closed. To accommodate the family pets we incorporated a doggie door in the main panel of glass of the door leaf.
All of the children’s bedrooms are equipped with Sliding doors including top-hung vents in sidelights for ventilation during high wind season and all allow for access to the deck outside, beach beyond. Special attention was paid to the exposure of locks and handles in the harsh corrosive environment of the Cape West Coast wind. This will ensure a long life for the hardware, locks and handles.
