Dock Road Junction
Dock Road Junction is the gateway district linking the City of Cape Town CBD with the V&A Waterfront. Trudy of MW worked with Leon Saven architect on this project.
This newly renovated heritage building has been transformed into an A-grade working environment. With its quaint personality, the refurbished and beautifully designed structure offers a location that’s been designed to be mindful of the highest standard of urban renewal principles. As a result, businesses located in this incredible centre tap into the feeling of authenticity of a bygone era, while the contemporary architectural additions create an inspiring environment. The district is an extension of the V&A’s mixed-use Canal District.
Metal windows scope of work included custom designed steel Forman Brand shopfronts and doors on the ground floor of the Dock Rd Junction Building. Refurbishment and servicing of the existing aluminium window products on all upper floors of the building.
The area in front of Dock Road Junction, now known as the Canal District, was of strategic importance until the Amsterdam Battery was disbanded in 1898. After World War II, extensive land reclamation from the sea to build a deep-water harbour shifted the Table Bay coastline a significant distance away, and the area subsequently fell into disuse. At the time that the V&A Waterfront commenced development in the area it was being used as a car park and occasionally used for events. In 2014, the V&A Waterfront Company acquired the old Queen’s Hotel and Amway buildings and has redeveloped these as part of the new District. The area accommodates bespoke shops, a shared working space and a flagship retail store.
These include Sealand clothing& bag store, Seattle Coffee shop, Neovision and the iStore flagship store.
